Vikki Howells AM has welcomed the announcement from Welsh Local Government Secretary Mark Drakeford that the Welsh Government will continue with its Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2018-19.
In 2016/17, the scheme led to almost 300,000 vulnerable and low income households in Wales receiving a reduction in their council tax. Of these, 220,000 households paid no council tax at all.
The Cynon Valley AM welcomed the continuation of the scheme, noting that in 2016/17 it supported nearly 26,000 households in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Vikki Howells AM said:-
“The Council Tax Reduction Scheme has made a real difference across Wales since it has been introduced, so I am delighted that the Welsh Government will continue with this progressive scheme in 2018-19.
“One in four households in Rhondda Cynon Taf receive support under this scheme, and a large number of those benefiting are elderly.
“Whilst the UK Government continues to cut the funding coming into Wales, Welsh Government has worked with local authorities to secure reductions in council tax for vulnerable and low income households, supporting those most in need”.
