Vikki Howells AM has joined local youngsters taking part in the Welsh Labour Government funded summer lunch and fun club at Penywaun Primary School.
£500,000 of funding has gone towards lunch and fun clubs in primary schools during the school summer holidays across Wales, and Penywaun Primary School is one of the RCT schools benefiting from the scheme.
The money is helping to provide breakfast, lunch, education about eating healthily and a programme of activities including arts, crafts and sporting activities.
Cynon Valley AM Vikki Howells said:-
“It was a real privilege to spend some time with the children and staff at Penywaun Primary School.
“The sad reality for too many of our young people is that the school summer holidays can be a difficult time. Children who benefit from free school breakfasts and lunches sometimes miss meals and go hungry once their school closes for the holidays, while the lack of free play schemes and sports activities can have an impact on those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
“It is important that every child in Cynon Valley has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their best. That is what this lunch club is about and I congratulate the Welsh Government and RCT Council for recognising the need and putting this scheme in place.”
