Vikki Howells AM has welcomed a commitment from the Welsh Government to amend night-time closure times on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road between Hirwaun, in her constituency, and Cefn Coed.
The Cynon Valley Assembly Member pressed Welsh Government Economy Secretary Ken Skates AM to make the change after she had been contacted by constituents who said the current closure times affected their ability to get around, and in particular to visit family members and friends in Prince Charles Hospital during evening visiting hours
In response, the Economy Secretary promised that in future night-time closure times on the road would be limited to 9pm – 6am as much as possible.
Vikki Howells AM said:
“Night-time closures have an important role to play in making sure our roads are safe and in good condition, in safeguarding the workforce carrying out maintenance activities and in preventing too much disruption to road users.
“However, closures must be scheduled so that they do not cause too much inconvenience to the people who would normally use the road.
“This was the case for those Cynon Valley residents who contacted me to say that the closure times were causing them problems, such as making it difficult to visit people who were having to stay in hospital.
“I am glad that after my intervention the Welsh Government has committed to amend the hours for its night-time closures.”
